The concept of argumentative essay

An argumentative essay is a type of academic assignment in which a particular issue is considered. In this type of essay, the writer tries to convince readers of his or her point of view through various arguments, evidence and reasoning. Quite often college students are faced with writing such argumentative essay. They can be on a variety of topics, from politics to science.

Moreover, an argumentative essay requires students to explore a topic, select and evaluate evidence, form a specific position on a topic, and convince the reader of it. In this type of essay there is a clear logical connection between its structural elements, arguments and the main idea.
Usually, argumentative essays have a clear structure that clearly distinguishes the writer's point of view, their evidence and reasoning. In general, the structure of an argumentative essay looks something like this:

- Introductory paragraph. It is considered the first paragraph of your essay in which your topic should be highlighted. It also contains additional information that is necessary to understand your arguments.

- The thesis statement which is part of your first paragraph. The thesis statement is a summary of your point of view, which consists of one sentence.

- Body paragraphs. They contain basic information about your essay. A typical argumentative essay contains about three or more paragraphs that explain your position on the topic. Each paragraph covers different ideas and also contains your evidence, which is a brief explanation of the reason why the reader should support your position. There you can give many examples or quotes from the text to confirm your opinion. In this way, you will quickly convince your readers as well as gain their trust.

- Conclusion. This is usually one paragraph that summarizes all of your arguments that have been mentioned in your body paragraphs. The conclusion has the greatest effect on the emotions and feelings of readers. Therefore, it takes a lot of effort to write a good conclusion in order to influence the reader.

It is important to note that all the structural elements of such argumentative essay are interrelated. They complement each other and help to better influence the reader's perception of text. Use this information to create the perfect structure for your essay. In this case, your essay will be not only argumentative, but also convincing and informative.

The main types of arguments and argument claims

In general, there are 3 main types of arguments that you can use in your argumentative essay.

- Classical. In this case, you should give the main argument that will help you convince the reader of the correctness of your position. This is one of the simplest and most popular methods of argumentation. It allows you to summarize the facts about your position.

- Rogerian. You show the problem, state your point of view and explain what the advantage of your essay is to the reader. The main purpose of this argument is to present the middle ground, given the two sides.

- Toulmin. Such type of argument represents one side, given the various facts that make the claim difficult to argue with.

In addition there are also five types of argument claims, namely value, policy, fact, definition and cause and effect. All of them are related to your argumentation of facts, position and influence on the reader.
